We’re a small local business based in Somerset West. Our products are locally designed, printed and made from ethically sourced South African leathers and natural fabrics.
Our mission is to make Moth as sustainable as possible: Although we try hard, we aren’t perfect, and will continually look for ways to be more innovative, and therefore more sustainable. Our products are made from beautiful linen /cotton blends, buldemin and calico, all grown and woven right here in South Africa.
Our veg tan is sourced from a small family run business in Woodstock, Cape Town. Their hides are sourced from all over South Africa. Vegetable tanned leather takes up to two months to develop in a process that is mainly done by hand. It requires skill, patience and care and the tanning process uses no harmful chemicals, unlike its chrome tanned counterpart. Which is why we try use it as much as we can in creating our products.
Our zips are sourced from Durban, and our buldenim and cotton calico is from the last cotton mill left in South Africa.
Jo illustrates and handpaints some of our designs. Some are locally printed right down the road from our studio. Each product is then cut and sewn up by Moni and Gracie, without them Moth would be lost.
Jo stays closely connected to ensure that our end result keeps to the craftsmanship, authenticity and ethical values of the brand.
And above all else, we are a proudly South African brand and love what we do.
